England is the largest of the countries that form the United Kingdom with a population of over 50 million. It has a rich and varied geography and history. Although visitors often visit only London, the capital city, each of the 39 counties has something unique and fascinating to offer the lover of beautiful countryside photographers or the curious historian.

Renowned for its beauty, Yorkshire is sometimes referred to as God’s own county. It has three national parks; the Yorkshire Dales, The North Yorkshire Moors and the Peak District. Much of the landscape is made of a rugged coastline, wild, craggy hills and more gentle valleys. The geology and the rocks laid down in ancient times have all left their mark on the varied and interesting topography that makes this a fascinating area to visit.

The area has a rich history and has been a battle ground from Celtic times, right through to Roman, Norman and the Middle Ages. Consequently there are many interesting houses castles and historic sites to visit, engage and photograph the inquisitive visitor.

South of Yorkshire is the county of Derbyshire and a continuation of the Peak District National Park. The park’s natural beauty attracts many visitors from all over the world and is said to be the second most visited park globally. The area is renowned for its wide valleys and as an area for hiking, climbing and caving. In addition it has many remnants from its historic past including many fine mansions, castles and houses. On Stanage Edge can be found abandoned millstones, scattered like fossils over the countryside; left incomplete with the decline of the market.
