Photos from Greece - Pictures of the Peloponnese - Photographic Images of Ancient Sites and Temples

Leave behind the ancient splendours and hurly-burly of Athens and a more tranquil world awaits the traveller to Greece. True there are more wonders from the ancient world but modern Greece is fast developing a new road infrastructure into the rural heartland of the mainland and Peloponnese Peninsula and surely the Rio-Antirio Bridge is a wonder of modern engineering, with its grace and beauty to rival even some of the marvels of antiquity.

Crossing from the mainland to the Peloponnese, one is struck by the beauty of the indented coastline with its azure sea and unspoilt beaches. Inland the mountainous interior contains the historic sites of Olympia, home of the first Olympic Games, Mycenae and Mystras, a Byzantine centre. The Mani Peninsula, the southernmost tip of mainland Europe, is an area caught in a time warp with its deserted villages left to fall into ruin and decay but now gradually being restored by those who want to live a life away from the stresses of the city.

The wild interior of the peninsula contains many conifer clad mountains and valleys and during the summer of 2007 the worst environmental disaster in Greek history was caused by wildfires which devastated large areas of forest and brush. Greece has encountered many set backs and overcome adversity in its ancient and more recent past. No doubt this will be yet another to add to the list.
